چکیده

Consider two orthogonal closed chains on a cylinder. These chains are monotone with respect to the tangential Θ direction. We wish to rigidly move one chain so that the total area between the two is minimized. This minimization is a geometric measure of similarity between two melodies proposed by Ó Maid́ın. The Θ direction represents time and the axial direction, z, represents pitch. Let the two chains have n and m vertices respectively, where n ≥ m, We present an O(n + m) time algorithm if Θ is fixed, and an O(nm log(n + m)) time algorithm for general rigid motions. These bounds also apply for planar orthogonal monotone open chains, where area is measured only within the common domain of the two chains in the direction This paper extends the results presented by the authors at CCCG’03 [1] School of Computer Science, McGill University. {athens,godfried}@uni.cs.mcgill.ca Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering, Concordia University. Evaluation of Similarity Measures for Template Matching

Image matching is a critical process in various photogrammetry, computer vision and remote sensing applications such as image registration, 3D model reconstruction, change detection, image fusion, pattern recognition, autonomous navigation, and digital elevation model (DEM) generation and orientation. The primary goal of the image matching process is to establish the correspondence between two ...

MelodyShape at MIREX 2014 Symbolic Melodic Similarity

This short paper describes our three submissions to the 2014 edition of the MIREX Symbolic Melodic Similarity task. All three submissions rely on a geometric model that represents melodies as spline curves in the pitch-time plane. The similarity between two melodies is then computed with a sequence alignment algorithm between sequences of spline spans: the more similar the shape of the curves, ...

The Simile Algorithm for Melodic Similarity

This abstract sketches the approach and the employed means for constructing measures of melodic similarity in our software toolbox SIMILE. For different tasks related to melodic similarity different hybrid algorithms proved to be optimal. The hybrid algorithms consist of several single algorithms mostly known in the literature that are taken together in a linear combination. One special linear ...

On Optimizing the Editing Algorithms for Evaluating Similarity Between Monophonic Musical Sequences

Melody is an important property for the perceptual description of Western musical pieces. In the monophonic context, retrieval systems based on melodic similarity generally consider sequences of pitches and durations. Algorithms that have been proposed for measuring melodic similarity rely on geometric representations, string matching techniques, etc. Adaptations of editing algorithms, mainly a...

A Geometric View of Similarity Measures in Data Mining

The main objective of data mining is to acquire information from a set of data for prospect applications using a measure. The concerning issue is that one often has to deal with large scale data. Several dimensionality reduction techniques like various feature extraction methods have been developed to resolve the issue. However, the geometric view of the applied measure, as an additional consid...

MelodyShape: a Library and Tool for Symbolic Melodic Similarity based on Shape Similarity

MelodyShape is a Java library and tool to compute the melodic similarity between monophonic music pieces. It implements several algorithms that compute similarity based on the geometric shape that melodies describe in the pitch-time plane. All these algorithms have obtained the best results in the MIREX Symbolic Melodic Similarity task in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 editions, as well ...
